The best way to describe the color is a light champagne color. No design. It looks great with the expresso color of the wood.

ummmm they're definitely is some sort of plastic over the seat. I can't remember if it's something that would be OK to leave on. It might be.

It's been awhile since we got our set, but my husband and I both feel sure ours WAS wrapped in a thin plastic.

When brand new out of the box is there plastic over the fabric on the seats?

yes, but all chairs do not fit underneath regardless of placement. They stick out a few inches on all sides.

Is there enough room on the sides to place the chairs to where there are two on each long side?

Not what I was expecting for the price. The chairs are already loose and I have had it less then 2 months from when it was delivered.
However, I love Walmart and I have gotten a lot of good quality things from there, so one unsatisfying thing isn't going to kill me this time.
